In recent decades, the concern about archives in the historiographic field has been growing stronger as a result of the emergence of new technologies and the implementation of public policies aimed at preserving documentary heritage, among other factors. However, the participation of historians in this area has not been systematically studied. This paper proposes an exploration on this topic based on two pillars: the initiatives on conservation of and access to documentary heritage, and the content on archives and documentary heritage in History teacher training courses and historian’s bachelor programs throughout the country. My main argument is that, despite the tremendous efforts made by the historiographic field to rescue, preserve and make various documentary collections available, the training to undertake these tasks is far from reaching the required standards.
