Although several teachers recognize that writing is a learning tool within different disciplines in Higher Education, many of them insist on the fact that including writing in their teaching practices would exceed the teaching time they have. This lack of time, added to other challenges faced by Argentine public universities (massive enrollment of students, desertion, inequality of students’ academic histories, among others), seems to discourage the work with “writing to learn”. Contradicting this widespread belief, this article seeks to elucidate how teaching time could be managed in university classrooms of Linguistics and Biology, where the teaching practices intertwined the skill of writing with disciplinary contents. We found that in two cases under study the “teaching time” was extended as students had the opportunity to write outside the classrooms and to discuss what they had written inside them.
