This essay explores different hypotheses that seek to explain the reasons for the deterioration of cultural assets in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. A synthesis of theoretical reflections is presented as a consequence of more than ten years of interdisciplinary research on heritage management. Three main ideas are proposed that are articulated among themselves, to incorporate the axes of economic discussion, valuations and social identifications. We conclude that multi-causal readings are required that put our budgets under tension on how and why the actors should participate, appropriate the heritage and protect it in a full exercise of citizenship.
