Objective: To analyze the effect of lowering of the utero-placental blood fl ow from the beginning of gestation, on the growth of the appendicular skeleton and in cases of prenatal retardation at birth, if there is catch-up growth during lactation. Three groups were formed: Control (C), Intrauterinegrowth retardation (IUGR) and Sham-operated (SH). The IUGR was induced by partial binding of uterine vessels at day 1 of pregnancy. SH group receive the same operating technique than IUGR, but without binding of uterine vessels. Radiographies were taken to the pups every 4 days from birth to weaning. During pregnancy and lactation mothers fed ad libitum. It measured length and width of humerus (HL, HW), radio (RL, RW), femur (FL, FW) and tibia (TL, TW). The variables were analyzed using general linear model and a multilevel linear model for repeated measurements. There were differences between C and SH, therefore SH was used as a reference. The differences, at birth, were significant between SH and RPC for RL, HW, RW, FW and TW, and weaning for HW, RW, FW, RL and TL. Widths had higher growth rate in IUGR than in SH, but with no significant differences. We conclude that the decrease in utero-placental blood flow mainly changes bone strength. There is incomplete catchup growth despite presenting higher growth rate.
