The enthusiasm with which Sanskrit began to be studied and translated in Germany during the 19th century reflected culturally peculiar representations and interpretations that need to be carefully considered. German, which for centuries had had a marginal status as a language compared to Latin and French, began to receive attention in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, coinciding with an interest in Oriental languages such as Persian and Sanskrit. Germanists and Orientalists joined forces with established classical philology in a kind of quest for the origins of a people and a language traditionally perceived until then as “déclassé”. In this paper, we intend to give an account of some of the debates and testimonies that reveal the intricate relationship between classical philology, Orientalism and Germanism during the 19th century. We will seek to provide a brief overview of the beginnings of the construction of a national identity which, because of its unclear origin and marginal status, gave rise to the wildest theoretical speculations and, in practice, generated a deluge of linguistic and comparative studies which have, in turn, left a deep impress on the history and development of these disciplines.
