Since the late twentieth century, policy evaluation is a central theme of educational agendas around the world. In this context, teachers are discursively challenged as key players in ensuring quality, and most countries have been pushed to the task of designing and implementing devices that would produce information on faculty activity. In Argentina, the renewed interest in the subject is bound up in negotiations for the approval of the collective labor agreement for the university sector and the definition of a teaching career at the national level. This article addresses the evaluation of teaching work as part of the academic career / teaching career mechanism, prioritizing the point of view of teachers from two Argentinian national universities that find themselves in different moments of implementing its institutional evaluation system. The analysis allows us to recognize tensions with the competition system, the institutional dynamics that generate assessment processes and their impact on daily work. Core issues regarding the what, how, who and what of the evaluation and its ability to set up ways of being, thinking and practice teaching work at university are identified.
