Focusing on two of Freud´s classic texts: Totem and Taboo, and History of an Infantile Neurosis (the case of the "Wolf Man"), this paper compares the methods of approaching the past used by historiography and psychoanalysis. It concentrates on issues such as the concepts of temporality, the use of analogies and the very ideas of historical development. We also evaluate the contributions that both disciplines can make to each other
