This paper reflects on truth, judgment and politics in our Time, based on the notion of post-truth, neologism used as an adjective relating to circumstances in which people make their opinions and respond more to feelings and beliefs than to facts. However, the article does not accept this definition without question, but rather starts from the concern that it reveals, to think and open its own questions. Can emotions disrupt the public space? Should politics be guided by truth and freed from all bias? Is there something new in contemporary democracies, traversed by digital technologies, that can make sense of the growing concern about the way in which citizens judge and form opinions? Are we witnessing a degradation of the conditions to exercise judgement? To address these questions, we use both the work of Hannah Arendt and different descriptions and analyzes of some experiences that generate recurring interest and concern both in public discussions and in social research. These are 1) the general distraction brought about by the digital world, 2) the echo chambers, and 3) surveillance, data collection, and the risk of manipulation of individuals and public opinion.
