Based on her own proposal of medicine´s classifications (biomedicine, traditional medicines, religious medicines, alternative medicines and lay treatments) the author analyzes the overlap between medicine and religion in the curanderismo (traditional healing), the lay treatment that shares this paradigm, the category of religious medicines and the sacred manifestations in alternative medicines. She stresses some traditions Catholic rooted are part of the curanderismo as institution from the Middle Age, so should not be considered with popular religiosity, isolated of their real context. She also discusses de utility of a category of religious medicines y underlines the notion of energy as expression of the sacred and is the nucleus shared by the alternative medicines.
