The private expedition of the Argentine soldier and politician Lucio V. Mansilla towards a presumed gold vein in the eastern border of Paraguay generates a delaying narrative, extended for thirty letters published between March and May 1878 in a senior newspaper from Buenos Aires, which modulates an indeterminate intrigue between real and imaginary. Disseminated in the generic mixture (open letter, mineralogical report, travel chronicle, geographical-mercantile adventure novel) the expository position postpones the resolution and multiplies narrative variations, which self-referentially explores the contact between words, things, and acts. Sustained in its own belief, persuasive power momentarily prolongs public credibility and financial credit in an ambiguous enterprise. Playful performativity interweaves verification with realization; the serial saga of the non-existent gold achieves that time passes while spreading an allegedly scientific and frankly subjective conviction.
