The so‑called theatrical paintings are scenes related to ancient Greek theatre in different ways, decorating ceramic artefacts of the period. On the one hand, they may be linked to a particular play. On the other, they may be related to a particular staging or to theatrical performance in general. And finally, they can be related to the theatrical field, either the backstage or issues associated with it, such as Dionysus and his courtship. The aim of this paper is to present some advances in our research on these issues, carried out during our research stay at the Classical Art Research Centre, University of Oxford, England.
