This work presents the results of the acetalization reaction between furfural and glycerol, using as a catalyst an ionic liquid (IL), [C4SO3Hmin][HSO4], synthetised in our laboratory. In addition, catalysts supported on silica gel 60 and on a mesoporous silica SBA-15 have been synthesised. Two series of catalysts with variable IL loading (10, 20 and 30 wt%) were prepared and characterized. These catalysts showed good activity for forming the desired cyclic ethers. Moreover, some of them showed higher activity than the unsupported LI. The catalyst with 30 wt% IL supported on SBA-15 (SBALI30) was the most active, with a cyclic acetal yield of 51%. This sample is the one with the highest number of strong acid sites, which according to the XPS results would come from the sulphonic groups present in the IL. On the other hand, the isomers cis-trans (2-(furan-2-yl)-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methanol and cis-trans (2-(furan-2-yl)-1,3-dioxan-5-ol are were obtained with both series of catalysts, with a higher proportion of the former due to its higher conformational stability.
