This paper analyzes the meanings associated with the use of anabolic substances for a group of young men who use and/or used these substances in the past and usually train between the irons of a gym without competitive intentions. All work is the result of an ethnographic research conducted during the period 2002- 2012 in various locals gyms where I interacted mostly with men between 16 and 40 years, mostly single and with relatively well-off socioeconomic positions that could be framed as belonging the middle and upper classes of the population. It is argued that the use of anabolics substances, far from being a disease, an addiction and/or a deviant behavior constitutes another link in a broad set of consumption practices of material and symbolic goods related, among food consumption or the incorporation of various dietary supplements, but it could also be extended to certain types of sportswear consumption. This perspective reinforces an economic approach to understand the consumption of anabolic drugs, freeing it from the heavy burden of pathological addiction.
