The present study aims to identify lighting conditions in healthcare environments that positively influence and indirectly favor the recovery of hospitalized patients. Preliminary results of a first stage were reported in which photometric measurements and perceptual evaluations were carried out during day and night times in two buildings of the same hospital with different architectural and lighting designs. The results show the predominant role of lighting (and views to the outside) within the environmental variables. Specifically, the higher level and uniformity of the measured lighting influenced the perception of color and amplitude of the space. The effects of relaxation and pleasure were associated with lower and non-uniform levels. The variables referred to uniformity, functionality and pleasure had the highest discriminating power between the perceptual diurnal and nocturnal assessments of the illumination. The results contribute to patient-centered designs.
