This paper focuses on an anthropological analysis of the founding of the city of La Plata, as a paradigmatic case of what we conceived as one of the first "development projects" of Argentina. The features that acquired the planning and implementation of the new capital of the province of Buenos Aires, founded in 1882 allows us to distinguish as a Large Scale Project (LSD) concept developed by anthropologist Lins Ribeiro to characterize the great public works. To analyze the context in which the new provincial capital was legitimized, we take into account the economic, political and historical context of the foundation itself, as well as the national and international levels. We consider the construction of a LSD is supported by the idea of progress, of which an "ideology of redemption", ie the "Great Work" (in our case the city of La Plata) redeem follows a region or nation of backwardness. So, always relates to a PGE with the promise of economic, social and political modernization of the region and / or nation where inserted.
