Historiography on lay administration of Jesuit property in the Plata River area has relegated the study of capital management to a relatively minor role. Works on colonial credit during the period have similarly failed to provide a systematic treatment of reformist tendencies regarding the funds of the affected church bodies. This article presents a reconstruction of credit policy applied in Buenos Aires during the period of this institutional structure, identifying assets/liabilities confiscated, revenue generated, assignation of censuses, management of religious foundations, and the stakeholders involved. Analysis links the logics of administration and local agents, showing how the mechanisms implemented from Buenos Aires to manage capital generated by Jesuit bodies under the Plata River Vice-Kingdom guaranteed the urban elite privileged access, highlighting the key role played by the Cabildo in absorbing and reassigning these resources.
