The word “health regions” surfaces in publications from international and national organizations and research from different disciplines, although very few have conceptualized it (Mendes, 2013; WHO, 2017; PAHO, 2023). The objective of this article is to explore and systematize the scientific production about the concept of health regions and their dimensions of analysis in various countries, with special interest in Argentina. And highlight the theoretical contributions from Geography that enhance the operation of health regions in public health. The methodology is qualitative, based on the search and analysis of official and scientific documents that refer to health regions in times prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The elaborate systematization advances the debate on the dimensions of the health regions already worked on and enables adjustment for their operationalization in specific contexts during and after the pandemic.
