In this article a comparative analysis of current tango music spaces and circuits in the city of Buenos Aires and its surroundings is carried out, according to the experience of its actors, focusing on the independent circuit. For this purpose, different qualitative research techniques are used, such as analysis of records generated during ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews, participant observation and informal talks. It is concluded that the independent circuit, in practice, intersects and overlaps at several points with the others, although there are specific characteristics that distinguish it. On the one hand, it is characterized by the pluriactivity of its actors and the absence of a defined salary, on the other hand, we find a series of subjective valuations linked to the category of “independent” that circulate among artists. This research explores its multiple connotations, which are marked by a series of conflicts and tacit agreements that operate at the same time at the aesthetic, economic and moral levels.
