Bipolar disorder involves fluctuations in mood states, biological rhythms and cognitive abilities. Mood states can oscilate between intense emotional activation and depression. Even though prior research has highlighted that there are differences in the characteristics of this disorder according to the age of onset, it has not tended to examine its role in the prognosis, comorbility, treatment and cognitive deficits of patients. Considering this gap, this narrative review aims to present studies that examine specific characteristics of patients according to the age of onset of the disorder, variations in the course of the disorder, and its relation to the type of disorder. The presentation of these studies will allow us to make recommendations for clinical practice, and to highlight the importance of conducting new studies on this issue.
