Macroinvertebrates and benthic diatoms are the most widely used organisms as indicators of ecological quality conditions in river systems at the international level. The objective of this work is to present and communicate the progress of the monitoring carried out in Yacimiento Petrolífero Caimancito (YPC), located within the Calilegua National Park. This work is developed within the framework of a doctoral research and will use benthic diatoms (Fam. Bacillariophyceae) as indicator organisms. Reference sites (R1, R2 and R3) and impacted sites (S1, S2 and S3) were selected along the Sauzalito stream. Morphometric information was extracted from the basin. In situ physicochemical parameters (pH, temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen) and laboratory parameters (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), ionic composition) were measured in the field. The average flow rate was calculated. The benthic diatom community was identified to genus level from epipelon/epilithon samples. The recorded pH varied between 8.9 and 9.3. Conductivity ranged from 600 to 990 µS/cm, while dissolved oxygen ranged from 5.6-10 mg/L. Measurements for BOD5 were in the range of 0 to 2.4 mg/L. None of the sites had detectable concentrations of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). Twenty-five genera of diatoms were identified.
