I understand independent theatre —which emerged in Buenos Aires following the founding of the Teatro del Pueblo in November 1930— as a way of producing and conceiving theatre that sought to renew the national scene based mainly on two characteristics: producing theatre of high aesthetic quality and doing so without profit motives. In this sense, it was constituted as a collective and defiant practice —given that it opposed the status quo of the theater of those years and promoted an anti-capitalist organization—, but also heterogeneous, since it showed itself to be a deeply rooted, complex, and rich in its diversity. This work is part of a larger one in which I aim to collect and analyze the contributions that the independent theater movement made, during its first twenty years of history, to Argentine dramatic literature. My first purpose is to find out the number of national authors who were part of the independent theater between 1931 and 1950, and to draw a series of conclusions in relation to who they were and the poetics they chose. In this article, I will advance along these lines, focusing on the emerging authors of independent theatre during the period 1933-1937.
