Paratific abortion caused by Salmonella Abortusequi is an specific disease of equids that produces septicemia of fetuses and abortion. After two decades without clinical records of abortion by Salmonella, the disease has been reappeared in 2011 producing high economical losses. Diagnosis is based in classic bacteriology supplemented with molecular techniques, which allow speed up the diagnosis. The aim of the study was share with the veterinary community the macroscopic and microscopic lesions finding in equine fetuses aborted by Salmonella Abortusequi. Necropsy, classical bacteriology, PCR and histopathology were carry out from six fetuses. Serohemorrhagic fluid in body cavities and friable and hyperemic organs, which indicated septicemia, were found in necropsy of aborted fetuses. Congestion, hyperemia, haemorrhagic foci, interstitial edema, and epithelial lesions, which suggested non-specific acute bacterial inflammatory reaction, were identified in histopathological studies. It is important to highlight that Salmonella Abortusequi was isolated in purity and high quantity from all samples so the macroscopic and microscopic lesions identified may be induced by Salmonella Abortusequi. We consider that necropsy and observation of septicemic non-specific lesions may guide the presumptive diagnosis to paratific abortion, especially in the current epidemiological status of our country; while the histopathology can provide information about fetal and placental lesions and should be considered as a non-specific supplement diagnosis. Classical bacteriology and PCR are the gold standard techniques to Salmonella diagnosis.
