On July 29, 1774, on the shores of the Bermejo River, Geronimo de Matoras -governor of colonial Tucumán- and the cacique Paikín-chief of a large coalition of Toba, Mocoví and Vilela indians- signed a fundamental treaty for the future of relations between the SpanishCreoles and those indigenous groups. This has not gone unnoticed by historians who dealt with such linkages. The present work intends to analyze it, proposing a new reading key. Following an approach used by Florencia Roulet, we crosses the text of the treaty with other documents that allow spying, through them, what could have been discussed or that the Spaniards could have promised, but that did not find expression in text. This allows us, for example, to accede to the indigenous interpretation of what was agreed in previous meetings or parliaments. The article also raises the status of the parties involved, the circumstances that led to the signing of the treaty, the order and manner in which the clauses are accommodated and presented, and the correlation of forces that may have existed between the parties.
