The advance of organized crime in Latin America has had a corresponding increase in the levels of violence in our societies, as well as in the use of the Armed Forces as an instrument to combat crime. However, the involvement of the Armed Forces in "non-traditional missions" has been heterogeneous. Our paper proposes the creation of a typology that allows analyzing the degree of the Armed Forces "modernization" according to the missions they carry out and the role assigned to them in these tasks. The methodology used is qualitative and focuses on the analysis of primary and secondary documentary sources. The main result obtained is that most of the Latin American Armed Forces have been modernized. We further conclude that the modernization process is a sequence that shows how the societies most affected by the advance of organized crime have "policed" the Armed Forces in order to combat crime and its effects on public security, as well as to maintain or reestablish internal order.
