At the end of the 19th century, the Argentine sugar industry entered its first cycle of overproduction. After almost two decades of growth, in 1895 the needs of domestic consumption were exceeded, the direct consequence of which was the abrupt fall in prices. The interests involved implemented different solutions, concluding that only through exports would they be able to stabilize the domestic market. Thus, agreements between producers and traders were tried, export subsidies were negotiated, and the “Unión Azucarera Argentina” S. A. was formed, in charge -in principle- of buying the stocks and dosing the sales inside and outside the country to increase the quotations. The historiography showed considerable progress in the analysis of this crisis, the corporate actions, and the behindthe-scenes of the sanctioning of a law of export premiums. However, a study focused on this commercial firm -fundamental in the political/entrepreneurial architecture oriented to exportswill allow us to approach in greater detail the conformation and functioning of intra-sector business agreements, to dialogue with the general interpretations of this situation and to provide new evidence on the first collusive practices in the Argentine industry.
