In this work, we want to show how the context of Argentina's political violence during the seventies entailed the modification of the operating logic of compulsory military service, i.e. the routine practices, rituals and dynamics that organized life in the quarters, as well as the values encouraged by military personnel. In this sense, we will show that soldiers were under risks and dangers which were even more terrible than those undergone in previous conscription experiences. In particular, we will discuss two factors that modified this logic: first, we will see the way in which military authorities, under the continuous risk of a guerrilla attack, established a “hero vs. traitor” binary logic to morally judge the behavior of soldiers; second, we will analyze the development of an epistemology of suspicion in order to prevent the existence of “undercover” soldiers.
