The objective of this paper is to analyze the main lines of the Buenos Aires prison reform carried out during the government of Domingo Alfredo Mercante (1946-1952). To this end, we will focus on the actions of Alberto Gómez Cabrera and Ítalo Argentino Lúder, both of whom were General Directors of the prisons of the province of Buenos Aires. In order to carry out this work, which is of a provisional nature and which needs to be further developed, we use materials located in the Historical Archive and Museum of the Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service, in particular, resolutions and annual reports of the General Directorate of Penal Establishments. In this way, we will try to demonstrate the scope and limits of the prison reform carried out during Mercante's government, especially with regard to the prison population, the prison staff and the establishments. It will be left for future research to analyse the new directions of prison policy established under the government of Carlos V. Aloé (1952-1955).
