This article examines the relationship between the National University of Patagonia Austral (UNPA) and YPF S.A., established under the University with YPF program (2012–2019) promoted by the Secretariat of University Policies. Drawing on a qualitative case study, the paper explores the organizational and regional boundaries of an experience that emerged following the enactment of Law 26,741 on Hydrocarbon Sovereignty in 2012, which fostered the reconfiguration of the relationship between Argentina’s academic system and the energy production sector. From the relational perspective of the Sábato Triangle, the study analyzes the actions implemented through the program and its actors, as well as the institutional conditions of UNPA in relation to research and university linkage activities. The findings reveal significant asymmetries in capabilities among the actors and only partially aligned agendas. In the case of UNPA, the analysis identifies a low density of research agendas focused on the energy field, the predominance of a professionally oriented institutional profile, individualized academic trajectories, and linkage practices largely centered on service provision. The emergence of Fundación YPF as a key bridging actor is also highlighted, although it faced difficulties in sustaining the relationship amid changes in government and in overcoming the traditional donor–recipient paradigm. Following Álvarez, Barletta, Suárez, and Yoguel (2016), the relationship ultimately evolved into an adaptive dialogue, conditioned by the limited complexity of the scientific and technological capabilities involved.
