In this paper, I reconstruct the historical contexts into which the conditional cash transfer program called ProgresaOportunidades was implemented. I infer hypothesis about the objectives of their implementation within the framework of a very long term process of structural adjustment, initiated by the unconditional cash transfer program Procampo. Both programs seem to have supported: a. a steady migration from the countryside to the cities, b. convesion peasants’ children to new economic activities; and, c. production of new subjectivities. Leaving aside in this article the various appropriations of monies from these cash transfers, I describe here how economics has created and promoted a culture of monetarism that promotes the imminent conversion of money in human capital.
