Hispanic American notaries played an active role in shaping the deals they signed, formalizing them in accordance with legal regulations, but also matching contractual parties. This article offers an approximation to the basic structure of this contractual universe in Buenos Aires between 1766 and 1784, when Río de la Plata estuary turned into a jurisdictional, military and commercial core. To meet this aim, this work reconstructs the documentary types registered by the three most dynamic notaries of Buenos Aires, the distribution of businesses and clientele among these notaries and the behavior of the contractual parties, providing an elementary and indispensable statistic based on 7203 entries recorded in the indexes of protocol books.
