Social behavior studies represent an important part of the efforts to understand the biology of a species. Armadillos are the most diverse and widely distributed of the Xenarthra. They are threatened by multiple factors; the very limited scientific information available for most species is a cause of concern. One of the conservation strategies for armadillos is the implementation of ex situ programs. However, the lack of basic information on the behavior of armadillos kept in controlled conditions makes it difficult to assess and improve their welfare. For this reason, we developed an ethogram for three armadillo species (Dasypus sabanicola, D. novemcinctus, and Cabassous unicinctus) maintained in ex situ conditions in the breeding facility El Turpial, in Villavicencio, Colombia. The armadillos were more active at night, although there was also a short activity period in the morning and another one after midnight. A total of 44 events grouped in nine states were observed. These behaviors were not present equally in all three species. This ethogram increases our knowledge of the behavioral repertoire of armadillos in human care. It will be useful for their ex situ management.
