The concept of “television series” today retains notable relevance, despite having lost its validity. In this article, I present the hypothesis that we are facing the emergence of a new serial form, associated with the ecosystem of video-on-demand [VOD] platforms, popularly known as “streaming”, which today constitutes the hegemonic audiovisual distribution system for audiovisual forms in general and serials in particular. The underlying hypothesis is that fiction series are the type of audiovisual flow that best fits the migration of the public from the old world of analog TV to the new world of digital information distribution networks. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the centrality of the artifactual dimension of VOD platform interfaces. I propose the existence of a specific metatypology: “seriality on demand”, characterized by a) the interfacialization of the series, b) their deprogramming concerning a synchronized grid; and c) the future flow of audiovisual production.
