| es_ES |
| dc.description.abstract | Branislava Susnik (1920–1996), a Slovenian anthropologist who settled in Paraguay, profoundly reshaped the country’s social sciences through her exceptional intellectual legacy, which lifted the Chaco from an obscure periphery to a central position in Paraguay’s Indigenous history. In doing so, she defied the canonical pillar of national historiography – long focused on the idealised encounter between the Spanish and the Guaraní – by positioning Paraguay within a vast ethnic stage that both explained, and was explained by, its neighbouring regions. Based on previously unpublished Paraguayan and Slovenian archives, this article retraces her personal and scholarly trajectory, shedding light on the key stages of her academic training, her institutional commitment, and her pioneering expeditions among numerous Indigenous communities. As director of the Andrés Barbero Ethnographic Museum until her death, she was its soul and its untiring linchpin. Although her exacting, often hermeneutically dense style and her natural reserve kept her at a distance from the dominant Americanist networks, her prolific work in ethnolinguistics and ethno-history remains an essential reference for understanding the ethnic and cultural dynamics of the Gran Chaco. By combining contributions from archaeology, linguistics, mythology, and sociology with history and ethnography, her rigorous analysis of cultural transformations and Indigenous strategies of resistance to colonial and evangelical pressures represents a methodological turning point. This establishes her work as a cornerstone of comparative lowland ethnology, presenting Indigenous history as a constant effervescence – a history in which mestizaje, alliances, exchanges, cultural borrowings, and multilingualism are neither accidents nor the result of a supposed “entry into history” brought about by colonisation, but rather an intrinsic condition of the regional ethnic landscape. | es_ES |
