Carboxylic peracids are organic oxidants of relevance in the cosmetic, food and agrochemical industries. They are traditionally used as intermediaries in a process known as Prileschajew epoxidation and synthesized using sulfuric acid as a catalyst, which also promotes undesirable reactions on the final epoxides. Therefore, the study of selective catalysts such as enzymes is a topic of interest. This system constitutes a liquid-liquid (liqliq) two-phase system thus the selection of a suitable solvent is crucial to increase the productivity of the reaction. In this work, peracetic acid synthesis experiments were carried out using diisopropyl ether, toluene, n-hexane and n-heptane as solvents in a batch reactor at 30 °C. The progress of the reaction was determined by titration of acetic peracid by iodometry and cerimetry in both liquid phases. The initial reaction rates were found to be 0.212, 0.252, 0.229 and 0.193 mmol g-1 min-1 , respectively. Therefore, the trend is not straightforward in relation to the polarity of the solvent. The experimental data were fitted to a ping-pong bi-bi enzymatic kinetic model to estimate the initial reaction rate, evaluated in the thermodynamic activities of the reagents. The model was able to reproduce the trend of the initial rate with the change of solvent. The activities of the species were estimated using UNIFAC, which proved to be suitable for modeling these liqliq systems.
