In this article, I analyze the commercial relations between Latin America and China from the perspective of Argentine, European, and Chinese commercial intermediaries marketing and selling Argentine wines in China. In the past decade, China has become one of the world's fastest growing consumer markets for imported wine and a desired destination for commercial intermediaries and foreign companies seeking to sell their products in the Chinese domestic market. This is the case for many Argentine wineries. Based on an ethnographic study that I carried out in Shanghai in 2018, I analyze the practices and ideas of these professionals as they market and sell Argentine wines in China. I argue that their main challenges are rooted in the construction of the relational value of Argentine wines in China—that is, the role of wine in social relations in this country.
