This paper argues that, in spite of the prevailing view to the contrary, Aristotle does examine to some extent the question of political obligation. To that effect it explores Aristotle’s answer to a hypothetical anarchist or libertarian challenge to the existence of political bonds and attempts to show thereby that Aristotle’s political theory is not as distant from modern political concerns as it is usually held to be the case. Key words: anarchism, Aristotle, authority, democracy, liberty, political obligation.
