The essay proposes a rereading of the novel El río oscuro (1943) by Alfredo Varela based on a materialism that supposes an alternative perspective to examine the extractive regime of yerba mate. In particular, it analyzes both the jungle and the plantation as spaces that deactivate the subjectivity of the mensú to propose a material assembly, an agency of the order of otherness. These are forms recognizable in the text that are examined as part of a regime of precariousness (Butler, Lorey) that also constitute an ostensible necropolitics in the Latin American narrative of the first half of the 20th century.
