The purpose of this paper is to address the relevant contribution of Norbert Elias's historical sociology to the notion of epistemic change, in line with an empirical illustration of the conceptual change of the individual-society relationship, coming from our own research advances. Elias describes the epistemic change as a long-term process, inherent to the civilizing process, from an approach that links psychogenesis and sociogenesis of human knowledge. On one hand, he makes visible that self-consciousness and the conceptions of nature and society always lag behind the progressive human capability to control them. On the other, his work highlights how the link between the dynamics of power relations and the self-regulation of psychological functions promotes or obstructs the development of adequate knowledge, assuming the content of reality and fantasy diverse factual expressions in the historical development. We analyze his theoretical contribution in the field of sociology of knowledge, presenting some data from an exploratory and comparative research. We study the psycho and sociogenetic formation of epistemic identities about the social order in different groups of workers and university students in Argentina in the twenty first century. We explore the logic and moral criteria involved in their descriptions, explanations and judgments about the processes that affect their social living conditions. We have found that the societyindividual relationship is invested with different meanings, according to the degree of knowledge involved in each stage of conceptual construction, being minority those conceptions appropriate to the objective complexity of the social order in the new millennium. Key words: Norbert Elias, conceptual change, individual-society relationship, workers and university students, Argentina 21st.
