One of the main sacred mountains in Basque territory, Aizkorri is the scene of numerous visits to the hermitage "del Santo Cristo", located above 1500 meters. This case study enables a deeper understanding of the construction of the territory in the Basque world. Through participant observation, the author has documented the socio-age diversity of the pilgrims, as well as the interconnection between religious, and recreational motives in the appropriation of high-altitude spaces in Euskadi. Some mountaineers choose to hike "from top to top", and they ascend to the neighbouring peaks Aketegui and Aitxuri -the highest elevations in the region- which boast topographic landmarks and emblems of Basque culture. In recent years, the mountainous area has also become the scene of popular speed and endurance races. The religious, sports and tourist practices in the heights of Aizkorri are added to the traditional pastoral activity, and to the unavoidable presence of the monumental Catholic shrine of Arantzazu in the lower slopes of the massif. The various forms of physical appropriation of the mountain are connected with the symbolic appropriation. Mythology related to telluric entities, such as Mari and the “gentiles”, plays an important role in strengthening the Basque identity. The impact of Basque folklore has also reached the Latin American belief system.
