In 1982, Josefina Ludmer coined the critic term ‘tricks of the weak’. Such tactics are used by subaltern authors when writing to confront hegemony. Thus, the trick consists of not only changing the sense of the space assigned by hierarchy, but also changing what can be done in that space (Fumagalli in Colombi, 2022). We could ask ourselves how these tricks work in two writings by Sor Juana which play a significant role in the publication of the author’s first book, Inundación Castálida (1689) and its reissue Poemas (1690): the sonnet dedicated to the Countess of Paredes and the prologue to the reader, respectively. The texts analyzed in this work (more precisely, paratexts or preliminaries) are placed between literature itself and edition: the dedication to the Countess of Paredes is a dedication of the entire book to her patron and the prologue to the reader, in 1960, replaces an anonymous prologue from the 1689 edition. In addition to these poems, we interact with the Respuesta (1961), since the tricks practiced in the previous years appear established in it. In this work, we will first consider the publication and patronage conditions in the 17th century between Spain and America, and then, we will focus on the selected texts written by Sor Juana to shed light on the strategies of the self that are used in relation to the time of publication.
