In the recent years, history has looked for new methods of analysis that account for the different aspects of the social dynamics through history. One of such new views is the history of the senses. This field focuses on the analysis and identification of the elements that reflect sensory experiences in primary sources from a particular period of time, in order to understand the representations that constitute its social imagery and the variations and changes in the meaning assigned to the senses. The history of the senses tries to determine how the senses interacted and worked together while functioning in a society, in order to elaborate the notion of “intersensoriality.” This last concept, popularized by Mark Smith, emphasizes the value of the interrelation of the sensory perceptions that shape the sensory model of a culture. Following these principles, the aim of our work is to analyze the Waltharius, according to the methodical guidelines provided by the history of the senses, identifying in it what we call “sensory imprints”.
