Given the successive failures of climate policies and while the goal of staying below the 1.5°C threshold becomes increasingly distant, we are also witnessing the danger of a complete hollowing out and co-optation of the so-called «energy transition». Under the interests of the most concentrated capital in alliance with the state apparatuses of the main world powers, the expansion of «renewable energies» has come to function as a device for a new wave of extractivism. The race to exploit lithium is not only not contributing to mitigating the climate crisis, but quite the contrary; as an emblematic form of green neo-colonialism, it is now fuelling the already senile sociometabolism of capital. Its large-scale extraction is threatening living hydro-communal systems in the high Andean regions of north-western Argentina with extinction. In the upper basin of the Abaucán (west of the province of Catamarca, Argentina), the exploitation of the Tres Quebradas project (under the control of the Chinese transnational Zijin) is causing serious socio-metabolic disruptions in the hydro-agro-food systems of the rural communities of the Bolsón de Fiambalá.
