The critical usage of genealogy, along with the relationships between biopoltics and psychoanalysis within the fi eld of literary scholarship, set some of the contemporary conditions for a rereading of Julio Cortázar’s Bestiario. This paper analyses the manner in which those current situations of the theory and criticism raise a question regarding the ways of government of the living for the 1951 short stories. From “Carta a una señorita en París” to “Circe”, this paper addresses how Cortazar’s early literature intervenes in the popular imagery of his own times from today’s perspective, dialoguing and arguing with other literary poetics, cultural debates and the exercise of bio-medical knowledge. Such a critical endeavor allows the exploration of certain nuances of contemporary theoretical discussions that leads to revisit these cultural materials.
