Within the framework of broader research on the relationship between psychology, psychoanalysis and child medicine in Argentina, this article aims to investigate the emergence and first developments of the psychosomatic perspective in pediatrics. Based on the contributions of intellectual history and historical studies on health, illness and medicine, the context of the emergence of “psychosomatic pediatrics” developed by Florencio Escardó is analyzed and the central theoretical aspects of the proposal are reconstructed. It is shown that, in Argentina, the incorporation of the psychosomatic approach towards the middle of the 20th century was preceded by proposals that called for a new medical sensitivity and a holistic approach to the child. Escardó’s proposal, based on contributions from neurology, psychosomatic medicine, psychology and psychoanalysis, combined the biological foundations of child development with a novel perspective, focusing on the child’s relationship with his or her family environment as the key to explaining health and illness. The spread of his ideas during the 1960s coincided with a period of important socio-cultural transformations, during which psychological knowledge expanded socially.
