Abstract

In recent years, the creative projects of various literary authors have increasingly incorporated narrative strategies that engage with artistic forms specific to Japanese comics and animation. This phenomenon is enabled not only by the establishment and consolidation of a cultural field that acknowledges the regional reach and impact of manga and anime, but also by a publishing industry and market that support the editing, circulation, and dissemination of such works. This article examines the conditions that have fostered the emergence of these fictions, as well as certain defining features of a literature written by and for an audience that may be identified as otaku, meaning enthusiasts of Japanese mass culture. Furthermore, it aims to outline some shared characteristics among these authors, which make it possible to group their writings based on material conditions of production and biographical parallels. To this end, the study draws on historiographical and sociological research in fandom studies, both national, in order to account for the local specificities adopted by otakism in Argentina, and internationally. It also engages with critical literature on manga and anime to explore the connections between these narrative codes and contemporary literary production.
