This paper explores the ways in which bioarchaeology generates knowledge, particularly with respect to the age estimation and age group classification methods commonly employed in the study of human remains. Through a review of the epistemological basis of biologically determined criteria, we consider the process by which the discipline constructs the object of study and its application in different societies. This leads us to consider the usefulness and validity of these criteria as universal, bearing in mind that different societies have different ontologies, i.e. different ways of understanding the world, and therefore different conceptions of the stages individuals go through in life. Finally, we propose integrating various methodological strategies combining bioarchaeological indicators with ethnohistorical and ethnographic sources. This approach allows us to understand alternative forms of knowledge and generate research programmes based on diverse conceptual tools, offering an alternative to traditional approaches to scientific research.
