This article explores the impacts caused by the restoration of Fernando VII to the throne in the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata between 1814 and 1820 from the analysis of the links established between the two Iberian monarchies. The study focuses on three variants of the Bourbon restoration in the South Atlantic. The first is the one that is configured around the alternative of a counterrevolutionary alliance between Spain and Portugal. The second refers to the expectations aroused by the Portuguese invasion of Montevideo. The third focuses on the options that open in the United Provinces after the declaration of independence.
