Tumbadillo is the layer of earthen ceiling that is applied to the underside of the mud (torta de barro) rooves characteristic of some regions of northwest Argentina and frequently found in Amaicha del Valle. Examining tumbadillo simply as a construction technique restricts interpretation of the social implications and production dynamics involved in its complex construction. To overcome this limitation, we use the concept of construction practice and address its complexity holistically. The two-fold objective of this work is to explore the tumbadillo as a construction practice and to define the dimensions of the analysis more precisely. The study involved participant observation of this construction practice and open, semi-structured interviews. By disaggregating analysis of the tumbadillo ceiling into a series of dimensions, researchers identified the logic and social practices associated with this construction practice and the reasons it remains relevant despite falling demand.
