From a conceptual history’s perspective, this article examines the link between the political identity of the Radical Party and the nationalist ideas in Argentina around 1916. My hypothesis is that Radicalism, led by Hipolito Yrigoyen, was a particular type of nationalism: a synthesis between nationalism and democracy. This view developed within the framework of democratization put forward a new definition of the political community. To this end, I analyze discourses of the party that exceed –but include– those most identified with Irigoyen, as well as certain views elaborated outside Radicalism (publicists, adversary politicians, etc.). My aim is to contribute to the historiography on Radicalism and on the political identities of the period, as well as to that of nationalism. In this way I expect to show the broad the spectrum of actors that contributed to the consolidation of a crucial ideological and cultural phenomenon of the 20th century.
