This paper analyzes specific variables of the outward growth model in peripheral areas of the vernacular productive circuit. In particular, we refer to the National Territory of Formosa, incorporated into the nation-state during the last decades of the 19th century. Taking as an empirical reference the demographic and economic indicators of the 1914 National Census, we intend to expose the dynamics between the territorial productive matrix and its society. In addition to the deeply studied forestry sector, this article highlights the presence of a landowner sector that promotes extensive livestock farming and the considerable presence of agrarian agents, among whom the presence of a rural proletariat little addressed by specialized local literature is perceived.
